Under the Zimbabwe Partnership to Accelerate AIDS Control (ZimPAAC) consortium in Mashonaland West Province, ZNNP+ strengthens activities that prioritize saving lives of PLHIV through treatment literacy, community mobilization, and direct peer support. By deploying Community Health Agents (CHAs) and Peer Supporters for high-risk groups, ZNNP+ ensures that people who fall through the continuum of care are identified, supported, and reconnected to treatment for improved health outcomes. The program focuses on addressing gaps in HIV prevention, care, and treatment through a community-led approach. Key priorities include treatment literacy, adherence support, psychosocial care, and peer-led initiatives that empower PLHIV to live healthier lives. ZNNP+ also emphasizes district-level community engagement, stigma reduction, and collaboration with faith and traditional leaders to build stronger community buy-in and accountability for HIV services. Strategic approaches include scaling up differentiated service delivery (DSD) models, expanding community-based TB and TPT services, strengthening PMTCT support through Mentor Mothers, and rolling out comprehensive treatment literacy packages that cover adherence, advanced HIV disease, viral load suppression, cervical cancer screening, and the uptake of PrEP. ZNNP+ has been implementing activities across 90 health facilities in five districts Hurungwe, Chegutu, Zvimba, Makonde, and Sanyati in Mashonaland West Province.
The selection of these districts was based on high numbers of recipients of care (RoC) on ART, gaps in DSD coverage, and low ANC uptake. In these districts, ZNNP+ has deployed 90 CHAs and seconded peer supporters to provide targeted support to high-risk populations, adolescents, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Through collaboration with Zim-TTECH and other ZimPAAC partners, the program leverages community cadres, support groups, and virtual platforms like Kutabila to create demand for HIV services, improve linkage and retention, and address community barriers such as stigma and discrimination. These efforts are aimed at ensuring sustained health outcomes and contributing to Zimbabwe’s goal of ending AIDS by 2030.
